Government House,

HongKong,

19th

October, 1900.

I have the honour to forward a copy of an

application from three Medical Officers for an increase of

their house allowance.

2. I attach a list of the Civil ser-

vants who are in receipt of House Allowance showing the a-

mount received and the amount paid by them. The statement of

Drs.Lowson, Thomson, and Clark is correct as to the rise in

house rents in HongKong of late years.

3. A question is involved whether House

Allowance is supposed to cover the actual rent of a house or

not. If it is, then the allowance granted to gentlemen in the

position of the applicants is inadequate.

4. I find that the lodging allowance gran

ted to Majors in the Royal Army Medical Corps who it may be

presumed are married men is $2.50 per diem for the lower lew

els in HongKong.

5. I recommend that the House allowance

of the following public Officers be increased to ₫ 50 per

month.-
